I’ve always had an single-pin sight on my bow. I suppose some of it is comfort as it is all I’ve ever known. The real benefit of the single-pin sight is the unobstructed view of the vertical pin…you just have a fuller sight picture.
The downside of the single-pin was on full-display during my recent public hunt at Hagerman NWA. My setup was just inside the woods with multiple trail crossings to the front and side of me. When the first buck came in, I knew I was going to have a problem…the shooting windows were tight and I just couldn’t anticipate quickly enough where the deer would come from to adjust my yardage with the slider.
For the first time since I started bowhunting, I was looking for a replacement for my single-pin.
After some googling, I stumbled upon the Trophy Ridge Peak…an innovative sight that combined the best of both worlds…multiple pins, but arranged vertically so as not to crowd the sight picture…more googling and I discovered the sight I needed…the Trophy Ridge V5 React.
Multiple Vertical Pins, One Adjustment
The sight design really is genius…the pins are arranged in such a way as to not take up any more room than a normal, single-pin sight. The draw of the React over the Peak is that its uses the Trophy Ridge React system to enable you to set your 20 yard pin and your 30 yard pin and let the math do the rest…your other pins are already at their proper positions.
I would advise you to go ahead an shoot at 40 or 60 a few times to really home in on the perfect setting since the longer range will magnify issues with your settings.
Lighting Comes Standard
Unlike my other sight, you don’t have to drop $30 to get an LED to illuminate your pins. The React comes standard with a light that has a tactile click with 3 different settings..unlike the other sight that can sometimes find its way into the “on” position and run out your batteries, the React requires you to be much more intentional when you want light.
In addition, the reticle of the sight has a Tru-glo ring that aids in low-light situations.
A Couple Drawbacks
No Aluminum Pro Version
Currently Trophy Ridge only offers the React V5 in a polymer housing…there isn’t an aluminum option. Based on the experiences I’ve read of others, the polymer is rock solid, but to me, it just doesn’t have the quality feel of a pro-grade sight.
Only 10 Yard Increments
This really isn’t too much of a worry, but the React V5 instructions suggests that the React technology for setting pins will only work in 10 yard increments. The reasoning provided is the math to set the React-driven pins expects 10 yard spacings. This combined with the fact that the pins cannot be set independently, leaves you with setting your pins 10 yards apart.
Final Thoughts
I’m extremely satisfied thus far with the results of the Trophy Ridge React v5 Bow Sight. The sight really does give you the best of both worlds…the one unobstructed view and simple setup of a single-pin with the benefit of not having to adjust yardages on the fly of a multi-pin.
